Living Pain Free

Pain relief is a big business, which makes sense when you think about it because about 20% of people experience chronic pain at some point in their lives. There's a special area in medicine just for pain, and there are many different medications you can get, both over-the-counter and from your doctor, to help manage it and improve your quality of life. You might have heard about the opioid crisis, which has been a big problem in recent years. It's caused a lot of harm, with over 450,000 Americans losing their lives because of it. Just last year, more than 150 million prescriptions for opioid painkillers were filled in the United States. That's like 46 prescriptions for every 100 people. But here's the surprising part – the use of opioids is not new. It goes back thousands of years to ancient times. The Sumerians, people who lived a long, long time ago, were already growing opium in Mesopotamia as far back as 3400 BC. In America, we often believe there's a pill for everything. If you've ever walked down the aisle in a drugstore, you've seen all those different pills and supplements competing for your money. Here's an example: A few years ago, a doctor told me to take Zantac, which is a common heartburn medication, after I had food poisoning. But guess what happened in April 2020? The FDA told the companies to stop making Zantac because they were worried it might have a chemical that can cause cancer in people. Another example is aspirin therapy, where people take aspirin to lower their risk of heart problems. But in October 2021, new research came out from the US Preventive Task Force that said, for folks over 60, the risks of taking aspirin might be more than the benefits. It could actually harm you by causing bleeding in your stomach, intestines, and even your brain, which can be very serious.

Groundbreaking New Tools to Control Pain

I'm excited to tell you about some new ways to ease your pain. If you're in pain, don't worry; there are tools that can help, and we're here to explain how to use them. One of these tools is called PEMF, which stands for pulsed electromagnetic field therapy. Have you heard of it before? The idea behind PEMF is quite simple. It's based on the fact that our Earth is like one big magnet. You can see this idea in action through things like gravity, the way the tides move, and the Earth's constant spinning. Our planet is filled with electromagnetic energy, powered by around 8 million lightning strikes happening every day. Our bodies need a special kind of energy to stay healthy. We get this energy from the food we eat, good sleep, and staying active. But as we get older, we naturally lose some of this energy. That's where PEMF comes in – it helps recharge our bodies and bring back that youthful energy.

PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy)

PEMF therapy originally aimed to help mend broken bones, and interestingly, veterinarians were among the first to use it to help racehorses with injured legs. Nowadays, it's used for many different things in people. It can help after neck surgery, depression and for aches and pains in your muscles and joints. These PEMF machines are fantastic because they not only help with pain and healing, but they also do some other great things. They can give you more energy and help you focus better. Plus, they make it easier to get a good night's sleep. It's not just one person saying this; studies have shown that PEMF can reduce swelling and make inflammation go down, and it helps your cells work better and gives you more energy. People who love PEMF call it "lightning in a box," and it might just be the thing you need to feel less pain, have better blood flow, and get more energy while boosting your overall health. Holistic practitioners, physiotherapists, and doctors are increasingly incorporating PEMF therapy into their offerings. I recommend giving it a try, because you'll likely be amazed by how well it works. Most people start with three sessions that last 20 to 60 minutes each, and they feel a lot better. But, honestly, some people, like me, feel better after just one session.

Egoscue Method, a kind of "Postural Therapy"

Egoscue is a method to help you get rid of chronic pain without using medicines or having surgery. It was started by Pete Egoscue in 1978. The main idea of Egoscue is that pain, whether it's long-lasting or short-term, happens when your body is not aligned the right way. To fix this, Egoscue uses gentle stretches and exercises. When you do these exercises, your body starts to align correctly, and you start to feel more comfortable, with less pain. Pete Egoscue is an American author and creator of the Egoscue Method, a system of exercises and postural therapy to relieve chronic pain and improve physical well-being naturally. He developed the Egoscue Method based on his own experiences and research, particularly after he suffered a traumatic injury while serving in the Marine Corps. His personal journey to find pain relief and improve his well-being led him to develop this method, which he refined and expanded over time.

For an Egoscue appointment, wear comfy, light-colored workout clothes. This helps the therapist see your posture better. After an assessment, you get exercises (called E-cises) to fix posture issues and pain. Sometimes, these exercises may seem unrelated to your pain, but they help your muscles work right. You might need to do these exercises daily. Results vary, but some see improvement after one session. You can use everyday items for the exercises, or buy special equipment.

Easing Pain With Counterstrain

Dr. Larry Jones, osteopath, a doctor in Oregon known for helping people with pain, had a patient who was suffering a lot. This patient had seen a few local doctors but was still in terrible pain. He couldn't even stand up straight, and he couldn't sleep at night. Dr. Jones decided to try something different. He spent about 30 minutes trying different positions to make the patient feel better. When he raised the patient's legs toward his head and shoulders and moved them to one side, the patient was surprised because he felt no pain. Dr. Jones had to leave for a bit to see another patient. When he came back, he found that the first patient had fallen asleep right in the exam room. When the patient woke up, he could stand up straight, and he looked really relieved and happy. The next person who couldn't sleep well was Dr. Jones himself. He couldn't stop thinking about what had happened. After thinking for a few weeks, he realized that changing his position had helped his body relax. It had calmed down a protective reflex that was acting too strongly. By trying different positions, he was able to stop muscle spasms and help his body feel less tense. This also reset his nervous system. Dr. Jones then continued to experiment with finding comfy and pain-free positions, and that's how he came up with Counterstrain as a new way to help people.

Importantly, Dr. Jones discovered more than 180 "tender points" that intersected with each unique treatment positions with proper positioning, these tender points of pain would simply vanish.

Counterstrain helps by letting out trapped inflammation from the interstitial pathways. These pathways are like fluid-filled channels around our cells. They are part of the interstitium, which makes up about 20 percent of all the fluid in our body. The key to Counterstrain is targeting the source of the problem rather than the surface muscle response. Amazingly Counterstrain releases take only about forty seconds and often produce lasting relief. "It's kind of like rebooting your computer,"

RELIEF, A Natural Treatment for Pain

Dr. Abhinav Gautam, who trained to be an anesthesiologist at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital and used to play tennis, has created something called RELIEF. RELIEF is a natural way to help with pain, stiffness, and trouble moving. It's designed to fix damaged parts in your body, like your hips, ankles, knees, back, and shoulders. What's cool is that it doesn't involve surgery. RELIEF uses special technology like ultrasound and artificial intelligence to find areas in your body where there is damage or trapped nerves. It then helps to free those nerves and repair the damaged areas, all without cutting you open with a scalpel.

Thanks to Dr. Abhi, I've learned that we don't have to blindly accept that aches and pains are just part of getting older - Tony Robbins

I hope you're as hopeful as I am about the possibility of living without pain. However, achieving this doesn't just depend on hope; it requires a determination to try new methods because there are new discoveries happening all the time. One of the most valuable lessons I've learned is that we need to be open to exploring beyond the usual methods to discover effective solutions. We also need healthcare providers who are willing to dig deep and find the real cause of the problem, instead of just treating its symptoms.
